Inside The MedTech Conference: Key Takeaways from Ben and Peter

The MedTech Conference brings together leaders, innovators and businesses from across the medical technology sector to discuss the ideas, challenges and opportunities shaping what comes next.

This year, SciPro’s Ben Neves and Peter Chang joined the MedTech community to meet with clients and industry leaders, build new relationships and hear first-hand what businesses are thinking about as they grow.

From the challenges facing early-stage companies to emerging areas of innovation and the realities of building specialist teams, the conversations gave Ben and Peter plenty to take away from the event.

We caught up with them afterwards to hear what stood out, what they learned and what MedTech businesses should be paying attention to over the coming year.

What were you most looking forward to going into The MedTech Conference this year?

Peter: “Learning about industry trends and what executives are considering as they scale their companies.”

What have been the biggest themes or talking points you’ve heard at the event?

Ben: “MedTech founders being able to lean on one another for partnerships and network. Investment into the industry across the past year hasn’t been where it’s been in years past, but that there are signs of money starting to flow. Clarity and a sound plan in which regulatory pathway your product or platform will go down is the biggest breakthrough for an early stage organization.”

Have there been any particular hiring trends, challenges or opportunities coming up in your conversations?

Peter: “Founders often use their networks to identify their first team members. However, their network often doesn’t have the exact skillset, or those connections might not be looking to move.”

Was there one conversation that changed or challenged how you were thinking about the MedTech market?

Ben: "I think my team prides ourselves in doing what’s right for our clients and making sure we are providing white glove service for them as hiring managers, but I want to bring back a bigger focus around the end goal - which is patients. And not just understanding our client’s value proposition to patients, but realizing how our talent plays a role in patient’s monitoring, operation, or recovery."

Which area of MedTech feels like it has the most momentum right now?

Peter: “Cardiac rhythm management and vascular access.”

What do you think MedTech businesses should be paying attention to over the next 6–12 months?

Ben: "There were a lot of up and coming organizations combining AI and machine learning with the monitoring of the body. I learned of so much new tech that will allow patients and consumers to monitor and get ahead of catastrophic health events, whether that be wearable or implantable technology."

What has been your biggest takeaway from the event overall?

Ben: “Organizations are looking for flexibility in how they hire and bring on talent. I’m very glad we’ve built our teams that provide offerings that best suit our clients asks as they balance their financial runway and needs for specific subject matter experts.”
